Mexico cuts diplomatic ties with Ecuador after arrest of ex-VP Jorge Glas

Mexico on Friday suspended its diplomatic ties with Ecuador after Ecuadorean authorities arrested former vp Jorge Glas from the Mexican embassy in Quito, CNN reported.

Glas, convicted twice for corruption, had been holed up within the embassy since looking for political asylum in December, a request Mexico granted earlier on Friday.

Police forcefully entered Mexico’s embassy in Quito earlier than making the arrest, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador posted on X, previously generally known as Twitter.

An announcement issued from the Ecuadorean president’s workplace introduced that the arrest Glas. 

Accoridng to Reuters, Glas, who served as vp beneath the leftist authorities of Rafael Correa between 2013 and 2017, was taken into custody amid heavy army presence on the magistrates courtroom within the Andean capital.

Tensions between each international locations have been escalating prior to now week.

The arrest comes after Ecuador on Thursday declared Mexico’s ambassador in Quito persona non grata, citing “unlucky” feedback from the leftist President Lopez Obrador.

Ecuador contends that Mexico’s asylum supply was unlawful.

In a press release, Ecuador’s presidency accused Mexico of “having abused the immunities and privileges granted to the diplomatic mission that housed the previous vp, and granting diplomatic asylum opposite to the standard authorized framework.”

Lopez Obrador mentioned he had instructed Mexican International Minister Alicia Barcena to droop diplomatic ties with Ecuador, calling the arrest an “authoritarian” act and a violation of worldwide legislation and Mexican sovereignty.

Ecuadorean authorities have claimed that they’d sought permission from Mexico to enter the embassy and arrest Glas, who was sentenced to 6 years in jail in 2017 after he was discovered responsible of receiving bribes from Brazilian development agency Odebrecht in trade for awarding it authorities contracts.

Glas, who has a preventive arrest warrant out on one other corruption case, has complained that he’s being persecuted for his political affiliation, which Ecuador’s authorities denies.
